He was the UK's most prolific convicted serial killer, but always denied his crimes. Shipman betrayed that trust in the most appalling and distressing way, killing at least 215, and possibly 260, of his patients. About 80% of his victims were women. The oldest was a 93-year-old woman, the youngest a 41-year-old man. Much of Britain's legal structure concerning health care and medicine was reviewed and modified as a direct and indirect result of Shipman's crimes, especially after the findings of the Shipman Inquiry, which began on 1 September, 2000 and lasted almost two years. Shipman is the only British doctor found guilty of murdering his patients.

David Richard Berkowitz

David Richard Berkowitz also known as Son of Sam is an American serial killer and arsonist whose crimes terrorized New York City from July 1976 until his arrest in August 1977. In 1974 he 'heard voices' in his head that ordered him to kill. He began to blame these voices on his neighbour Sam Carr's black labrador that kept him up at night by its barking. He would send hate letters to Carr and in April 1977 even shot and wounded the dog. On July 29, 1976 he killed his first official victim. His modus operandi was to approach unsuspecting people late at night, pull out a gun from a brown paper bag and shoot them at point blank range. Most of his victims were couples, necking in their cars or in a park late at night. His female victims tended to be brunettes with long hair, which caused a scare in parts of New York and had women 'blonding' themselves and cutting their hair short to avoid being targetted. Shortly after his arrest in August 1977, Berkowitz confessed to killing six people and wounding seven others in the course of eight shootings in New York between 1976 and 1977; he has been imprisoned for these crimes since 1977.

Jack the Ripper

Jack the Ripper is a pseudonym given to an unidentified serial killer active in the largely impoverished Whitechapel area and adjacent districts of London, England, in late 1888. The victims were women earning income as prostitutes. Most victims' throats were slit, after which the bodies were mutilated. The removal of internal organs from three of the victims led some officials at the time of the murders to propose that the killer possessed anatomical or surgical knowledge.

Countess Elizabeth Báthory was a Hungarian countess from the renowned Báthory family. The family is famous for defending Hungary against the Ottoman Turks. She is possibly the most prolific female serial killer in history and is remembered as the "Blood Countess" and as the "Bloody Lady of Csejte". Around the age of 4 or 5, Elizabeth had violent seizures. These may have been caused by epilepsy or another neurological disorder and may have something to do with her "psychotic" behavior later in life. Countess Elizabeth Bathory murdered over 600 women and girls in the early 1600's, primarily so as to bathe (quite literally) in their blood. She was quite fond of torture and left a nightmarish legacy that would later inspire an Irishman named Bram Stoker to pen his legendary "Dracula."

Gilles De Rais -over200

Gilles de Rais a prolific serial killer of children. Over a ten-year period, with the aid of his servants, de Rais purportedly lured as many as two hundred children to his bedroom. These children ranged between six and eighteen years of age. De Rais was fascinated with the beauty of children and the pain they were capable of experiencing. Although de Rais did not hesitate in making girls his victims, he was partial to boys. If a boy was blessed with an excellent singing voice, he might be lucky enough to escape with his life.Rather than be put to the Question, de Rais chose to confess everything. Only a full confession would spare him the torture he was so familiar with. His tearful confessions were so repugnant that one of the judges was moved to pull a curtain over a nearby painting of Jesus. In court, de Rais proved his obsession with the serial killing of children by describing their agonies in great detail. "He confessed to having wallowed in the elastic warmth of their intestines. He confessed that he had ripped out their hearts through wounds enlarged and opening like ripe fruit. And with the eyes of a somnambulist he looked down at his fingers and shook them as if blood were dripping from them." It was said that he had once dismembered a pregnant woman to make sport with the foetus.
